Fountain pens by Chris Woodford. Will there come a time when handwriting is completely obsolete? It just might happen! Most of us write far less than we used to: If you’re lucky, you might still get letters and greetings cards in the mail that have been written out by hand. And if you’re super lucky, they might have been lovingly handwritten with a fountain pen—probably the most individual and expressive instrument you can use for sending a written message to another person. How exactly do these ink-scribbling machines work? Let’s take a closer look! A quiver of fountain pens from my collection.
Writing in your Bible is something that many people do but few do it judiciously. Many people only mark their Bible according to what they hear from the weekly sermon and after a while they underline or highlight everything making the actual process of marking your Bible pointless. There are many people that do not make any additional marks in their Bible and some even consider it heresy. I believe that if done properly marking in your Bible can be a very useful way to better understand the Word of God.
Wide margin Bibles were made for just such a purpose.

Metal nibs have their origins as far back as ancient Egypt and were made of metals like copper and bronze. However, the quality of writing that could be achieved with these pens was inferior to that of reed pens. Metallic nibs were made up through the 18th-century as one-off, craftsman-made luxury items . In the early ‘s, Wise in Britain, and Peregrine Williamson in the United States were the first recorded makers of steel pens as their primary occupation.
Metal nibs are also easily manufactured to have different properties for different purposes. Also, they can now be attached to and removed from holders, allowing one to switch between nibs with relative ease. Pointed nib, flexed and unflexed Pen nibs come in a variety of different shapes and sizes for different purposes but can be split into two main types: Broad nib[ edit ] The broad nib, also called broad-edge or chisel-edge, is the older of the two nib types.

I have already written about another photograph that was attributed to family member of the same name but a couple of generations apart. Can we say with exactitude exactly who these people are? Some of these pictures in this post I have doubts about. This photograph came from the collection of a descendant of John Lawn living in Australia. A lesson for amatuer genealogists which I learnt from making a similar mistake in another family history is to always research your images!
Friends — not family? Charlie Preshaw and Maria, Reefton Photograph original from E. Tempting though it is to see a resemblance, one must look for clues and balance with the documentary evidence to establish whether an image is possibly who it is supposed to be, and if it cannot be extablished with certainty, err on the side of caution. The brothers all came to New Zealand, although George returned to England.

Many people have a whole lot of pens, myself included, yet there are a select few in my collection that I would consider the best; the pens that, if I had to give up all my other pens, I would choose to keep. Limited editions are one of the main culprits that fit the bill here. Who really cares if there are only other pens like yours? Take, for example, the numerous LE Visconti fountain pens that seem to come out every week and come encased in boxes made from fine cedar and gold leaf. Do you think they write better than your regular Visconti?
Brand Seriously, brand does not matter for the most part. In fact, one of my local pen stores has a huge bucket filled with broken Mont Blanc pen parts that came off pens that were simply unsalvageable. Vintage vs New The best thing about buying an old fountain pen and having it restored is that you know for certain that the pen has lasted 50 or more years, and will continue to last after being serviced.

I have run across a few, but they have been in distressed external condition. Recently, this pen crossed my path and I made a nice trade for it. Moore Pens began near in Boston, Massachusetts and were a significant player in the fountain pen world for a good part of the first fifty years of the 20th Century. The Fingertip was their answer to the streamlined pens of the s, highlighted by the Parker 51 and Sheaffer Triumph nibbed pens.
Fingertips were made from to , and unfortunately for Moore, did not enjoy the successes of the Parker and Sheaffer pens, and mark the beginning of the end for Moore. However, they were solid pens, and are extremely collectible today.

History[ edit ] Early prototypes of reservoir pens[ edit ] An early historical mention of what appears to be a reservoir pen dates back to the 10th century. According to Al-Qadi al-Nu’man d. Leonardo’s journals contain drawings with cross-sections of what appears to be a reservoir pen that works by both gravity and capillary action. Historians also took note of the fact that the handwriting in the inventor’s surviving journals is of a consistent contrast throughout, rather than the characteristic fading pattern typical of a quill pen caused by expending and re-dipping.
While no physical item survives, several working models were reconstructed in by artist Amerigo Bombara that have since been put on display in museums dedicated to Leonardo. Klein and Henry W. Wynne received US patent in for an ink chamber and delivery system in the handle of the fountain pen European reservoir models[ edit ] Deliciae physico-mathematicae, The fountain pen was available in Europe in the 17th century, and is shown by contemporary references.
In Deliciae Physico-Mathematicae a magazine , German inventor Daniel Schwenter described a pen made from two quills. One quill served as a reservoir for ink inside the other quill. The ink was sealed inside the quill with cork.
I also prefer very, very fine nibs, and they tend to present this sort of feel more than broader nibs. But why do certain nibs perform differently to others? Why is it that even two supposedly identical nibs can write differently to each other? What matters is how the nib is made, not what it is made from. There are normally one of a few main materials in the body of a nib: Gold is used because it is very flexible when compared to steel.

By Rick Propas [Note: A list of sources and additional reading is to be found at the end of this piece. Rather this is meant to be a readable introduction to Pelikans for beginning collectors and newcomers] The history of Pelikan begins with Germany’s industrial revolution in the early nineteenth century and continues into the global economy of today. During that period, the firm has consistently been a technological leader, even as its fortunes rose and fell.
Eight years later Wagner took over the business giving it his name and expanding it into office supplies. In , Wagner added the name of Pelikan, from one of the elements in his family crest. Although Wagner was late to enter the field, they revolutionized the manufacture of German fountain pens with the first piston filler. Today, collectors from around the world put huge amounts of money, time, and energy into collecting what began as a homely little expression of German modernist pen design.
The first Pelikan fountain pen was introduced in and was something different in the world of pens. It had to be, for the firm had come to the market late but with a remarkable innovation in filling systems. Compared to most fountain pens of the s, the original eyedropper-filler had been highly efficient with only two moving parts and a large capacity. But it was messy, cumbersome and time consuming. By the mid s, the sac and the various devices used to compress it had become the dominant filling system in England and America.
It not only requires experience but also rare technical competence in areas as diverse as mechanical design engineering, prototyping, and testing. The pen uses dry ink tablets that are activated by adding water. In this year, Russell Parker also joins the company. Soon afterwards, Duofold becomes world famous with the ‘Big Red’ for its new bright orange colour and year guarantee. After three years and experiments, a quick-drying ink ‘Quink’ formula arrives.
This is the first pen-cleaning ink that dries fast on paper and needs no blotter.
If you’ve always wanted to see what it’s like to literally get the ink flowing with a fountain pen, this guide offers the basics you need to get started.
It is a tribute to his resilience and persistence in the face of economic and business pressures. These were due to attempting to start and sustain a small size fountain pen company in the Midwest during a time of intense competition from bigger companies and the never ending needs of additional capital and legal battles from the likes of the Conklin Pen Company. That was a pen dating to approximately , a few years before this pen.
As you can read in that post, after Welty won his lawsuit against Conklin, he was in need of additional funding and brought in Evans as a partner in the Evans Pen Company. This is an example of a pen made in the short time that Welty and Moore were together, before Moore took over the line completely. It was the final move for Welty and the Company seems to have remained there into the s. At the end of this post I will show a picture of a Welty Chicago fountain Pen.
Here is a photo of the dismantled Servo Fountain Pen, which was probably produced sometime after in conjunction with Moore. The unique Welty Filler Patent can be found by clicking here. As you can see, the lever is reverse to most lever fillers and opens from front to back.

Composition[ edit ] Basic India ink is composed of a variety of fine soot , known as lampblack , combined with water to form a liquid. No binder material is necessary: A binding agent such as gelatin or, more commonly, shellac may be added to make the ink more durable once dried. India ink is commonly sold in bottled form, as well as a solid form as an inkstick most commonly, a stick , which must be ground and mixed with water before use.
If a binder is used, India ink may be waterproof or non-waterproof.
India ink (British English: Indian Ink; also Chinese ink) is a simple black or colored ink once widely used for writing and printing and now more commonly used for drawing and outlining, especially when inking comic books and comic ink is also used in medical applications.

Abstract Additive manufacturing AM is poised to bring about a revolution in the way products are designed, manufactured, and distributed to end users. This technology has gained significant academic as well as industry interest due to its ability to create complex geometries with customizable material properties. AM has also inspired the development of the maker movement by democratizing design and manufacturing. Due to the rapid proliferation of a wide variety of technologies associated with AM, there is a lack of a comprehensive set of design principles, manufacturing guidelines, and standardization of best practices.
In order to advance research interest and investment in AM technologies, some fundamental questions and trends about the dependencies existing in these avenues need highlighting.
The purpose of the PENguin is to offer first rate, fully restored fountain pens, fountain pen information and useful resources.
And there are a few things one can do to heighten this pleasure, and its feeling of ritual. Another is improving your handwriting. The nature of the tool requires more skill and attention on your part, but the experience is richer and the result sharper. Fountain pens work by managing the rate at which the ink flows through the pen. When the pen is held at an upright angle, ink from the reservoir is drawn downward by gravity, and goes through the feed and to the nib in a controlled fashion.
Unless air is brought into the reservoir to replace the ink as it is used, a vacuum will build up that stops the flow. This created a capillary-esque mechanism that functioned by drawing ink into these small channels at the same time that air came back in over the fissures and entered the reservoir. The modern fountain pen was born. You had to unscrew a portion of the barrel and use an eyedropper to fill the reservoir drop by drop.
At the turn of the 20th century, companies began introducing self-filling reservoirs that allowed users to put the nib in the inkbottle and fill the reservoir by pulling a lever or twisting the barrel. Despite the introduction of the ballpoint pen in the early s, fountain pens maintained their dominance as the go-to writing instrument up until the mid-point of the century.
