Students will work with expressions, equations, inequalities, and functions. The course places considerable emphasis on identifying key features of functions in various forms, such as graphs, tables, and equations. It also fosters an understanding of functions as relationships that help people in many walks of life calculate and plan. The course brings these concepts to students in many forms, including interactive graphing, videos of solving problems, and many practice items. Students will work with rational, radical, logarithmic, inverse, and piecewise functions. They will also extend their studies to include systems of equations and inequalities, trigonometry, complex numbers, and statistics. The course emphasizes using these algebraic concepts to solve problems and help people in many walks of life. The course employs many tools to teach students these concepts, including interactive graphing, videos that walk through problems, and many practice items.
‘Speed Dating’ – an activity to work on introductions/hobbies etc!
Each student will need their own card. So I was going to just make a double set of copies of these 16 problems. You may also want to have whiteboards and markers available for student work unless you want to collect and analyze their work. I just want them to have practice solving logarithmic and exponential equations.
Stage 2: speed-dating. Prior to the lesson, the classroom should ideally be arranged for paired work. Best of all is to arrange the chairs in the room in two rows, facing each other, ready for the conversations to take place. Once the students are in the room, divide the class into two groups.
By now we will all know exactly how everyone of our students are doing. Some will have worked hard from the very first day of the course and are in total control of their learning. However, others will have only just woken up to the reality that exams are around the corner. This means that each student will have very different needs and so lessons need to take this into account. Below are a few features of a lesson as we approach exam time.
Whole class teaching will be used less as this will not target all individual needs. Lots of small groups working on a specific topic or technique that they find difficult. Setting of lots of small targets for individual students. Feedback on progress is given in the same lesson. Small group teaching for students who struggle with a specific problem. Sharing of exemplar answers so students can see where they need to get to.

This lesson should be used after students have written a first draft of an argumentative essay. As students enter the room, give them a note card. Ask students to indicate on the card, which part of the essay they found to be most challenging. Have students sit facing a partner and tell the students that they will be going on a “Speed Date” with their paper. Explain to the students that they will spend a few minutes talking to someone about their paper and their writing process.
Instruct students that each partner must discuss and offer feedback for each questiion. Start the attached presentation. Present the first question and allow the teams to talk for approximately three to five minutes. Instruct the partner on the right to move one seat over to sit with the next person and then present the next question in the presentation. Continue this process until all four of the questions have been discussed.
Allow time for the final evaluator to read the rough draft and complete the evaluation. Have student take the completed evaluation to their original seats. Have students take out the cards that they received at the beginning of class and write down any helpful feedback that they received during their dates.
Tell students to use the cards and the feedback from the “Speed Date” to edit, revise and rewrite their paper for final submission.
